Light Exposure to Improve Cognition, Sleep, and Metabolism

Start: April 1, 2019
End: August 31, 2023
Enrollment: 30

What Is This Study About?

This study will evaluate the long-term effects of a treatment using light on cognition, sleep, and metabolism in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), mild Alzheimer's disease, or a related dementia. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either a tailored light intervention or a placebo treatment at home for six months. The intervention will provide daily stimulation with bluish-white (experimental) or yellow-white (control) light sources that are tuned to the sensitivity of the circadian system, which controls the human sleep-wake cycle. Researchers will measure if the intervention can reduce sleep disturbances, inflammation, insulin sensitivity, and improve glucose metabolism and cognition.
