Traumatic Brain Injury and Dementia Risk in Veterans

Start: July 1, 2021
End: June 30, 2026
Enrollment: 800

What Is This Study About?

This study will examine whether veterans with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) have an elevated risk of developing dementia. Researchers will recruit veterans who are either healthy, have a history of TBI, or have mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In three study sessions, participants will undergo a neuropsychological assessment, MRI brain scans, provide blood and spinal fluid samples, and complete memory tests. Researchers will also measure participant brain activity as they complete a computer-based memory test. Over five years, researchers will continue to measure changes in memory, brain activity, and markers of neurodegeneration. The blood samples will be used for genetic testing for the APOE gene, associated with the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
